Lake Cobbossee "Cottage"

Description:
This lodge-like cottage is one of the more unique and preserved historical lake cottages in Maine, said to have been built in 1895 by the president of the Maine senate next door to the shorefront cottage of his friend, the governor, it is set on 1 1/2 acres with 252 ft. of waterfront in a lovely wooded area on the west shore of Lake Cobbossee.
The cottage retains its original architectural character throughout. The walls and ceiling of the great room have exposed spruce timbers with bark from giant white birches tacked between, while the walls and ceilings of the rest of the house are paneled in narrow hard pine beaded matchboard showing the original varnish. The floors are wood throughout.
Unique features of the house include the boat-like porch with its curved rail above the lake, the round tower bedroom, the balconied lakefront bedroom, the large field stone fireplace, many casement windows with original glass, a curved banister stairway and the many built-in window seats in the great room.
The current owners built a charming cabin on the rise above the cottage to serve as a bunkhouse that comfortably sleeps 4 guests.
This cottage comes with a redwood dock and raft with a diving board, along with 2 classic boats: a 16 ft. mahogany and canvas Penn Yann runabout built in 1955, and an 18 ft. twin bowed lapstrake Rangeley lake boat, built in 1935.
The cottage is 5 mile from interstate 95, six miles from the Augusta state capitol, five miles from picturesque Hallowell on the Kennebec River, and i hour from Portland and its international airport.
Lake Cobbosseeconte lies within the borders of 5 towns. It covers 5542 acres, is 9 miles long with a maximum depth of 100 ft. Cobbosseeconte means "the place of many sturgeon" and was named by the Abenaki Indians. The name goes back to at least 1629 when it was mentioned in reference to the Plymouth Colony grant.
